We used this book to build our own canoe, which you can see in some of the pictures
throughout this site. It's beautiful, strong, light, and causes people to come up to us in
parking lots and strike up conversations. The book is clear, well written, and recommends
technology that works. If you want to build one of his boats, look into buying plans
though. Scaling up the ones in the book would have been a real pain. We bought our
Chestnut Prospector plans from a Toronto boat shop called Tender Craft which at the time
did major mail order business in bead-and-cove cedar strips, West epoxies, cane seats and
so on.

- Mr. Wilson describes a portage at River Valley which starts near the bridge and goes
across the railway tracks. Somebody please tell Mr. Wilson that the portage trail is (now)
on private property and is clearly posted as such. We lined half the rapids under the road
bridge, and ran the other half, but it was tough. Beware of the waterfall just past the
railway bridge! Go to shore before the waterfall!

paddled down the entire Mississippi River in their home-made, cedar-strip
canoe. Accompanied by their Australian Cattle Dog, Annie, they started at
the source of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota where the
river is a small stream. Most of the way they camped in a tent on the banks
of the river, as they followed it 2,500 miles all the way to New Orleans.
They experienced many adventures, like getting lost in a large swamp,
battling 4-foot waves on a huge lake, getting stuck on wing dams, and
dodging barges. They also saw an abundance of wildlife and met many
interesting people that represented a cross-section of the United States. It
was an opportunity to reconnect with each other and rediscover their inner
selves.
